Itinerary
A sacred rocky islet for over a thousand years, Mont Saint-Michel rises at the heart of a bay with some of the strongest tides in Europe. Between legend, religious fervour and medieval architectural feats, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers a timeless journey to the summit of the “Wonder of the West”.
The Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel. Founded in the 8th century after the archangel Saint Michael appeared to Bishop Aubert of Avranches, the abbey was enlarged throughout the Middle Ages into the dizzying architectural ensemble known as “la Merveille” (the Wonder). Its suspended cloister, monks' refectory, hall of the knights and abbey church bear witness to eight centuries of monastic life and to Gothic and Romanesque architectural mastery.
The Bay of Mont Saint-Michel. Famous for its spectacular tides, where the sea can retreat more than 15 kilometres, the bay offers an ever-changing landscape of quicksand, salt meadows and foreshore. This unique environment, classified as a nature reserve, has shaped the isolation and mystery of the Mont for centuries.
The ramparts and the medieval village. Built in the 13th century to protect the abbey from English assaults during the Hundred Years' War, the ramparts encircle a medieval village of picturesque lanes. The Grande Rue, lined with half-timbered houses, leads visitors from the fortified gates up to the abbey, past shops, historic inns and breathtaking views over the bay.
